An author’s guide to publishing in 2012: What’s the right path for YOU?

I was invited to speak at a meeting of the California Writers Club-Sacramento branch. Many members of this club are aspiring to publish books (both fiction and nonfiction) and are baffled or overwhelmed by the many paths to publication available today.

What follows is a detailed description of the many shades of publishing today, from pure self-publishing to a Big Six traditional contract. I’ve described the advantages and disadvantages inherent in each approach. I offer questions for writers to examine their own strengths and weaknesses to help them assess what path to publication is right for them.
