The Health Club Mysteries series by Michael Rushnak (Terminal Neglect 2008, The Savior Vaccine 2011, Denied 2012). Indie medical thrillers. Summary of the first book:

A pharmaceutical “whistleblower” is murdered. Within hours, Health Commissioner, Dr. Jonathan Rogers is shot after interviewing with the President of the United States for the position of Surgeon General. Rogers awakens from surgery with a shocking medical finding and soon discovers that he’s been targeted by a sinister cult known, inexplicably, as The Health Club. Under the control of a scurrilous drug lord, The Health Club has infiltrated the highest levels of political and corporate powers in America by marketing a new blockbuster drug called Zazotene, in spite of clinical trials that resulted in the deaths of patients.

Dr. Rogers is soon confronted by a tidal wave of misery for those closest to him. He is given an ultimatum. A refusal to join The Health Club will result in an early demise for his wife and daughter. An acceptance will mean that thousands of innocent patients will die taking the killer drug. No matter how the Commissioner chooses, people will die. Who will be the next victim to face the wicked wrath of The Health Club?

Unnatural Selection by Thomas Pryce (2012)

A deadly mix of plague and environmental disaster forces a small group to seek refuge in an underwater facility. Located off the coast of California, Pacifica was originally conceived to study alternative energy systems and algae farms as part of America’s continued effort to go green. Who knew that its greatest service would be as sanctuary for the human race.

Jesse Baines is one of the fortunate few to make it down to Pacifica—although Jesse doesn’t feel all that lucky. Unlike most, Jesse finds Pacifica confining and bleak. And after his parents are lost—one to plague, the other to the sea—he wants out more than ever. But leaving Pacifica is easier said than done.
When a mission back to land is authorized Jesse finally gets his chance. And what the team finds is startling and strange, the environment so vastly altered as to be another planet. Every step upon the cauterized soil brings new adventure, the mystery as deep and dark and dangerous as the Marianas Trench. The obvious threats of cannibalism, disease, and searing radiation turn out to be only the beginning.

Why do the majority of the survivors have dark skin? What caused the deadly plague and global decline? Come face to face with a creature of impossible origins. Discover the secrets of a strange new world, and the unfathomable forces behind it all. And most of all, find out if you have the Darwinian vigor to survive.

Unnatural Selection is based upon sound science, where facts meet fiction like the undulating lips of a giant clam. This is an edgy thriller crammed with intrigue and wonder, and implication that reaches beyond the plot.
