Book Buzz: THE RITHMATIST by Brandon Sanderson (YA fantasy)

At, I specialize in books that have scientific or medical content (see my post on how this is different from science fiction). But sometimes I come across a book that simply is too good not to share, even if it might not appeal to my technophile niche audience. Therefore today I’m launching a new and entirely unpredictable series of posts I will call Book Buzz.

What prompted me to do this? The Rithmatist by #1 NYTimes bestselling fantasy author Brandon Sanderson. It’s a YA fantasy novel recommended for ages 12 and up.

I bought this book for my kids. When my son finally picked it up, he was hooked. Rarely have I seen him so enthralled by a novel. He read it in two days. He stopped playing video games to read it. He tried to carry and read the book while taking a hike with the family.

That’s your review, folks. No analysis, no plot summary beyond the back-cover stuff I’ve copied below. My son is 12 and he loved this book. (He also is a huge fan of Percy Jackson/anything by Richard Riordan.) Maybe your kid will love it too.

Summary from the publisher:

More than anything, Joel wants to be a Rithmatist. Chosen by the Master in a mysterious inception ceremony, Rithmatists have the power to infuse life into two-dimensional figures known as Chalklings. Rithmatists are humanity’s only defense against the Wild Chalklings—merciless creatures that leave mangled corpses in their wake. Having nearly overrun the territory of Nebrask, the Wild Chalklings now threaten all of the American Isles.
As the son of a lowly chalkmaker at Armedius Academy, Joel can only watch as Rithmatist students study the magical art that he would do anything to practice. Then students start disappearing—kidnapped from their rooms at night, leaving trails of blood. Assigned to help the professor who is investigating the crimes, Joel and his friend Melody find themselves on the trail of an unexpected discovery—one that will change Rithmatics—and their world—forever.

Bestselling author Brandon Sanderson brings his unique brand of epic storytelling to the teen audience with an engrossing tale of danger and suspense—the first of a series. With his trademark skills in world-building, Sanderson has created a magic system that is so inventive and detailed that that readers who appreciate games of strategy and tactics just may want to bring Rithmatics to life in our world.

One Response to Book Buzz: THE RITHMATIST by Brandon Sanderson (YA fantasy)

  1. I wasn’t sure about this book and initially thought it was a one off. After the first chapter or two I started to really enjoy the story and grew to like the characters that Brandon presented. It wasn’t until the end did I realise the while it felt like was written as one off it ended as the start of a series. I actually felt a little disappointment there wasn’t a following book already to go.
